It is with great sadness that we share the news that on the 14th December 2024 Conway Thorns, our Club President, passed away at home aged 83.
With the passing of Conway Thorns shortly before Christmas the club has lost one of its stalwarts. The word is often overused but in Conway’s case it is completely appropriate. It was perhaps inevitable that he would become so, following on from his father’s involvement in the 1960s and 1970s. It was a great source of pride to him that the legacy continues through his son and grandson.
After a period of employment abroad he returned to the club in the mid-eighties to resume playing. He become heavily involved in all aspects of the club, initially as a Captain in the Second XI helping to develop many of the younger members and subsequently as a coach to the colts. He became Chairman for a period of 7 years before latterly becoming President.
However, this broad overview does not truly reflect his commitment to the club. Both he and Olga, together with others, carried out countless other tasks which are central to the running of any club but which all too often can go unnoticed. The club is very grateful, and he will be sorely missed.
Our condolences go out to Olga and the rest of his family at this sad time.
David Jemmett
Chairman
